and hit his head. He was a little bit foggy and decided it was best not tocontinue on, and he's out of the race. This is one of the more difficult things about working in a race like this. In this situation if he has an intact neurological exam, you can continue to let him ride. It's almost like a "stress" test when you get back on your bike. The decision was fairlystraightforward when he got back on his bike. He had a mild concussion."

Lance can ride off into the sunset with his 7th win, and the rest of the peloton can start thinking about how things will be next year. I have to say that for the most part it was once again a pretty dull Tour as far as the GC went.

Aside from the drama within the main race, for which there was plenty, starting of course our own David Zabriskie and his awesome start in yellow, to his heartbreaking crash in the TTT. We saw Hincapie win a stage, Horner go on the attack (then get dropped), Vino attack, then attack again, and again! Rasmussen was the star winning the first jersey ever for Rabobank, as well as (almost) winning both the polka dot jersey and third overall.

All in all, it wasn't a bad Tour, but I can't wait for next year when it'll be a "whole new bike game"!

I have to say that I although I still think Riis has one of the best run teams in the peloton, I have to agree with what Bob said about they're lack of respect and poor choice of tactics by leaving the Yellow jersey behind in the time trial to ride home on his own.

My heart sank as Dave had to re-mount after a bike change, and ride to the finish line (head down) alone. Not even one teammate stayed behind to escort Zabriskie home. CSC had all nine riders and could have easily given up one (or two) teammates ride back with David.

David's decision to abandon the tour on yesterdays stage, was difficult to watch, and it was clear that he was not only physically, but mentally defeated. I hope in time he will come to realize the magnitude of his accomplishments at his first tour, as well as for the entire season and it will help to lessen the pain.

Way to go DZ!

His decision to abandon was due to his inability to fully recover from the heavy injuries he sustained in his team time trial crash on stage 4 which cost him the yellow jersey.

Before the stage start in Gérardmer, Zabriskie told reporters. "I hope I'm better today; it's been a real big roller coaster for me this past week. I finished yesterday, and we'll see what happens today."

News of Zabriskie's withdrawal shocked Voigt who was only told of it by a journalist in his stage winner's press conference. "I am really surprised," said the German rider. "Yesterday, he rode about 120 of the 228km by himself. I guess he has never had time to recover [from his injuries]. I really feel for him.

"Whatever happens he is still my hero. Hey, he beat Lance Armstrong [in the time trial] and that doesn't happen often."

American Lance Armstrong was told by Tour de France organizers that he had to wear the race leader's yellow jersey in Wednesday's fifth stage.

The American, chasing a seventh Tour win, had not wanted to wear the coveted jersey as a mark of respect for compatriot David Zabriskie of the CSC team.

Zabriskie, in front since the opening stage, lost the overall lead to Armstrong after crashing near the finish of Tuesday's team time trial."I decided not to wear the jersey today in respect of the tradition and in respect of Zabriskie," the Texan said before the start of the fifth stage in Chambord.

But organizers later told his Discovery Channel team that he would be disqualified if he did not wear it and Armstrong started the stage with the jersey.

"I watched the television yesterday night and I had a sick feeling," Armstrong had said. "The CSC were very close and without this crash they would have had a great chance of winning the stage.

"It would have been a matter of tenths or even hundredths of a second. There is a tradition in the Tour de France not to wear the jersey when you take it from a mishap.

"The last I can remember was that Greg LeMond didn't wear it when (Rolf) Sorensen crashed."

Sorensen broke his collar bone in a crash during a finish in the northern city of Valenciennes in 1990, handing the yellow jersey to LeMond en route to his third Tour success.

"On the top of it, the jersey went from one American guy to another. I didn't feel like wearing it," added Armstrong.

Zabriskie hit the ground in the final two kilometers, hurt his knee and needed stitches for a cut to his right arm. He went into the stage two seconds ahead of Armstrong but is now ninth, 1:26 down on his compatriot.

Wednesday's stage is a 183-km ride from Chambord to Montargis

By Stephen Farrand

MONTARGIS, France, July 6 (Reuters) - David Zabriskie came home 176th in the 183-km fifth stage of the Tour de France on Wednesday but was happy to have made it to the finish after his high-speed crash in Tuesday's team time trial.

"I hurt my ribs in the crash and it was a little painful when I had to breathe deep but I'm happy to have made it through okay and I hope I can come around in a couple of days," the American said.

Zabriskie has slipped to ninth in the overall standings, one minute and 26 seconds behind Lance Armstrong after his crash but is determined to stay in the three-week race.

"This is the Tour de France and I started out really great by winning the prologue and wearing the yellow jersey so I'd love to finish more than anything else," he said.

"I'm trying to put the crash behind me as quickly as I can. I've just got to forget about it and move on with the race."

Zabriskie was touched by Armstrong's wish to not to wear the yellow jersey as a sign of respect for his unlucky compatriot.

"That was a nice gesture," Zabriskie said.

"When he told me I said 'I hope they don't kick you out of the race' and just after that they told him he had to put it on. He wore it but I appreciate what he did."

He added: "Everybody in the peloton was supportive. They understand what it's like to crash and their support helped me get through the day."

Until I here directly from Dave, we'll have to keep guessing as to how and why David Zabriskie went down in the TTT yesterday. And its always a possibility that we'll never know the real reason.

So far I've heard he touched wheels with the rider in front of him (I doubt it), his chain broke (fire the mech), and today in the S.F. Chronic., that (possibly) fan's errant elbow hooked DZ and caused him to fall, that would be a bummer.

The good thing is that DZ was able to start, and finish today's stage.
More to come....

An X-ray examination on Tuesday evening revealed no signs of broken bones in David Zabriskie's body. This means the American Team CSC rider is ready to continue in this year's Tour de France.

"Obviously Dave is in a lot of pain after his crash, but he's a tough guy and after the examination he was determined to continue in the race," says Team CSC's press relations manager, Brian Nygaard.

With less than two kilometers to go in Tuesday's team time trial, Zabriskie crashed and lost his yellow leader's jersey to fellow countryman Lance Armstrong of Discovery Channel.
